Help fight cystic fibrosis!

Friday, March 30th, 2007

My family is supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation through their Great Strides fundraiser.  We got involved because of the daughter of one of our friends has CF.  Her name is Ella and she’s a remarkable little girl.  I started a blog about our team here (there are a number of teams raising money on behalf of Ella called Ella’s Elite).  Check out http://www.ellaselite.org/ for information about supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and learning more about Ella and other kids with CF.

Random thoughts for Monday

Attorney General Gonzales is probably either a liar or a moron.  Neither of which is particularly good for the country, or for Gonzales.  Personally, I don’t care if Bush wanted to fire all of the US Attorneys and replace them with more qualified personnel (i.e. that is those who will do what the Republicans tell them).  As we’re seeing, that’s a decision (even in its limited application) that appears to be backfiring.  But lying about it is stupid - especially in the age of email.  And if he’s not lying, how clueless can he be?

I’ve watched a fair bit of NCAA basketball over the last few days.  It’s nice to watch people play hard - these guys actually play defense!  I haven’t been paying much attention, but apparently the NBA changed the draft eligibility rule last year.  I guess now you have to be 19 and out of high school for a year before you can be drafted.  Some are saying that the change has resulted in the best freshman class in years, but others (like Bob Knight) believe it means that some guys are showing up just to play (OMG!  I’m shocked!) and because of the structure of academic eligibility rules, don’t even have to go to class.

Personally, I think we just need to stop the pretext of believing that Division I basketball and football players are, for the most part, in college for the academics.  I think it is bad for higher education, but what I do.  I guess I’m just resentful that my tuba scholarship didn’t come with a “tutor” that would help me study do my homework for me.
